Instead, there’s an even more uncomfortable – and very Mark Millar – plot about a superhero being blackmailed into suicide to save his kidnapped son. The broad strokes are mostly the same, though without everything relating to Goliath’s death. This drives Iron Man into championing the cause and heroes have 28 days to unmask. The big tipping point that sets off the demand for registration is when Speedball fights a villain and Happy Hogan’s son gets killed in the crossfire (as Brevoort is quick to point out, Hogan totally doesn’t have a son). It’s very different from the story we’d eventually get and comes with notes from Joe Quesada and Tom Brevoort (who is the far more critical of the two). Reprinted in the Civil War Script Book, we see Millar’s initial concept for a twelve-issue Civil War miniseries. ![]() That wasn’t how things were originally going to go. Millar was given the assignment and ended up doing his big seven-issue miniseries that turned Marvel’s status quo upside down. The concept of the series came from the mind of Brian Michael Bendis, who bounced ideas off of Mark Millar and later other Marvel writers. ![]() ![]() ![]() Seller Inventory # 9781529379310īook Description Softcover/Paperback. We had a family friend who knew Roald Dahl - one of my favourite authors - and this friend offered to show Dahl my story. It turned out to be quite a long story, really a short novel, and I rewrote it the next summer. ![]() ![]() I started out writing sci-fi epics (my Star Wars phase) then went on to swords and sorcery tales (my Dungeons and Dragons phase) and then, during the summer holiday when I was fourteen, started on a humorous story about a boy addicted to video games (written, of course, during my video game phase). and on the opposite coast, in Halifax, Nova Scotia. At around twelve I decided I wanted to be a writer (this came after deciding I wanted to be a scientist, and then an architect). I am open to any and all books. I am always in the midst of reading at least one book, I try not flip back and forth between books, but I just can not help it sometimes! As we unlayer more of this electronic journal I thought it would be fun to incorporate book reviews! I mostly read non fiction, educational books about business development or the fashion industry. I like to read magazines, because well DUH I just can not get enough of magazines. I like to know what words the retailers are using in their emails. I like to know what my clients are reading. The slim volume collects samples of her prose – short reflections, essays, literary introductions – on a variety of topics: Reflections on writing and the creative process, Oliver’s encounters with the works of other writers, literary analysis, and her observations of nature and, in particular, of animals. Going by her high ratings on Goodreads, thousands of readers seem to agree with this praise.įor any reader who wants to get acquainted with Mary Oliver’s works, Upstream is as good a place to start as any. She also strikes me as a keen observer of nature, and as genuinely curious and kind. She appears to have been a fiercely intelligent individualist with a well-developed sense for the poetic in the mundane. Mary Oliver is one of America’s most beloved poets, and based on what I’ve seen of her work, I can see why.
